Rick

Rick Havern started in the world of music in 1965. His first band was "The Rough Riders" with his brother Mickey and a neighborhood kid, Jimmy Gillan. Remember those matching polka dot shirts! In 1968 he was introduced to Bill Brisotti who plays the banjo. Got to learn how to play that thing! They formed the “Unkle Billy’s Banjo Band” This was a family band with mom on mandolin, dad on washboard, uncle Johnny on drums and spoons, Mickey on bass guitar and banjo. Bill and Rick on banjo. UBBB played the nursing home circuit for many years and also church dances, private parties, county fairs, weddings, wakes, you name it, we've played it!

In high school, Rick formed "The Jug Band" for the talent show. It turned out to be a pretty good band and TJB started playing for political rallies and all sorts of things. Another band was formed with many of the members from TJB. The band was called "The Hubcaps". Nothing like a bunch of grease ball high school kids playing 50's music!

Throughout high school, Rick played the sousaphone in the marching band (they wouldn't allow banjos). He was also the president of the concert choir. He was part of the pit band for the theatre group "Clever People" and had a brief tour in the Northeast. He went on to singing "jingles" for radio commercials and recording with numerous groups.

Rick has played with many different types of bands in many different venues including "Your Father's Mustache", "The Red Garter" and even on "The Brooklyn Bridge" He is an honorary member of "The Long Island Banjo Society", The San Diego Banjo Band", and founding member of "Dixie Express". Rick has also performed with the Central Oregon Symphony Orchestra in their winter concert series.

Rick is the owner of Havern Cabinetry & Design and a certified coach for the Special Olympics of Oregon
